A Day in the life of a Carer

Caitlin Full Time Carer from Walthamstow age 39

My name is Caitlin I am a Full Time Care Worker working for RAH -Adams Care Ltd. I have been doing this for 7 years since my daughter was born as it allowed me to work around her daily needs. Before I became a Carer I worked full time as a Sales Assistant but the hours were long and the work never felt like it was rewarding to me.
As a Carer I go out into the local community and help different Clients to live normal lives at home. I usually make meals, give medication and assist with Personal care. I try to fit in 3 or sometimes 4 Clients per day. I receive my Rotas weekly via email. This allows me to plan my week ahead.
It’s 9am and my first lady today is Mary she’s 89 old. She has a family but they are in a different town. When I arrive I let myself in as I have key access because it is difficult for her to get to the door. I wake her up and open the curtains and get her into a sitting position in her bed. I make her something to eat for her breakfast, she likes Weetabix with warm milk and some sugar. I then make sure that she takes her daily medication. I help her to the toilet so that she can relieve herself and I can then help her perform her daily hair wash and Personal care wash. it’s then back to bed after I have changed her bed linen. I then help her change the Channel on her TV so that she can watch her favourite programmes on daytime TV.
The time is now 11am and I am now in my car driving to my visit that starts at 11.30am. It’s about a 15 minute journey. I’m on my way to see Linda. She’s a 23 year old Adult with some learning difficulties. She also has some mobility issues that are due to her heavy weight that is a side effect of her main condition. When I arrive she is already awake and waiting for me. We talk about how she slept during the night. I will spend an hour helping her go to the toilet and assisting with hair washing and drying and Personal care. I always make her lunch whilst I am there. Usually a sandwich that will include a form of protein with salad and crisps and a portion of fruit. I leave it where she can easily access it. I also make sure that that there is food in the fridge for tomorrow. Linda likes to talk about her favourite music. She’s really into BTS (a Korean Boy Band) I always make sure that my knowledge of Current Music and Trends and General Knowledge and films are up to date, so that I can actively and enjoyably engage with every Client.
I wish that I had chosen to be a Carer a lot sooner. I like the fact that I get to make someones life easier and brighter everyday. It has also changed my life as I have more time to spend with my daughter. The rate of pay is also a lot better than working in Retail and the potential for progression is there if I want it.

A Day in the Life of a Maintenance Officer

Joshua age 26 Maintenance Officer from Essex

My Name is Joshua, but everyone calls me Josh. I work Full Time as a Maintenance Officer for ASP. When I left school I really never knew what I wanted to be but I knew that I wanted to work within the ‘Trades’ so I decided to do Apprenticeships. All these years later and I am a qualified Electrician and Airconditioning Service Technician. I am also skilled at Carpentry.
Each day at around 5pm my Maintenance Supervisor sends me my tasks for the following day on the inhouse ASP Tasks APP. A typical day will usually consist of me responding to 3-5 requests. Each day is literally an Adventure in Service!
I usually wake up at around 6am when my Alarm goes off. I wash and get ready. I make a Coffee to go and grab my Personal Tools. We do have a large Tool Cupboard at work but sometimes I just like using my own. I get the Tube from Epping into town. My working day starts at 7am and I like to arrive on time.
It’s 7.30am. My first Task today is to carry out EET Testing (Electrical Equipment Testing) at a Site in East London. This involves looking at and Inspecting 7 different categories of appliance. Basically any appliance that plugs in to a wall socket. As the Site is also used for accommodation purposes as well as Office Space then I will be testing Class 1 and Class 2 Electrical appliances. So stuff like Computers, Microwaves, Kettles, Toasters, Printers, Photocopiers, Any handheld devices. I will firstly have to carry out a Visual Inspection to make sure that the appliances are in a good state of repair, I look very closely at the the cables and the plugs. Secondly I will then test the Integrity of each appliance injecting test signals into the cable and the appliance itself.
Once I have completed the Testing I can then issue the Test Results. Firstly I fill out the Inventory listing every single item. I include the Name, Description and Location. Next I will issue the Test Results for every item. This also includes a Visible Label on every item stating whether it passed or failed and a detailed explanation for why it did not pass. Finally I will issue the next date for Testing. I can issue all of this via the ASP App. The Report will be linked to the account for that Site and The Premises Manager will also receive a copy.
The time is now 11.30am and the APP is sending me onto the next Task for 12pm at a Site in Tottenham Court Road. So I jump on the Central Line and make my way there. It’s a Serviced Accommodation Site. The Task is listed as Preventative Planned Maintenance walk through.
When I arrive I make my way to the Building Managers Office to let him know that I have arrived. It’s quite a large Tenanted Site. All of the Tenants will have been given advance notice of my arrival. This Task starts right at the building entrance where I will check the Alarm by doing a Test to make sure that it goes off. I will then walk through the Building and check all of the Fixtures, Fittings, Bulbs in every area. I include The Utilities Meters and the grounds at the back of the Building. The idea of this Walk Through is to check that everything meets the Strict Health & Safety Requirements that this type of Premises should. Throughout the walk I will make Notes on the Area plan of the Location of every Fixture and fitting, Alarm, Fire Exit etc. I will note whether it needs Upgrading, Fix and Repair or Replace. I can then upload the Preventative Maintenance Report through the Task APP to their account. Again the Building Manager will also receive a Copy. A Walkthrough for a Site this size will usually take around 2-3 hours.
I managed to finish the job in just under 3 hours so at 2.30pm it is time for me to take a lunch break. I really enjoy my lunch breaks in Central London as there is so much choice. I opt for a Baguette from Greggs! That should keep me going for a while. As my next Task is now showing as 3.15pm at a Site in Bethnal Green, so back onto the Central Line. This job shouldn’t take long though as it is to replace 6 bulbs in the Toilet and Washroom area. Once I have completed the Task I document on the Task APP the Location, What I replaced and mark the area as Now Open for use. The Building Manager will as standard receive a copy for the Report. The time is now just approaching 4pm. As I start at 7am my finish time is 4pm. I have had a lucky day as I can quickly jump back onto the Central Line and make my way back home to Essex. I will always be grateful that I decided to train for a Trade. I am kind of doing my dream Job really if I’m honest. So everyday is not really like just having a Job. I’m doing something that I love and everyday is different.
